Good sexual health is an integral part of overall health and happiness. Results of two new studies reveal that 53 percent of women, and 45 percent of men, use a vibrator. The studies also show that using a vibrator enhances sexual health, and is associated with other positive health behaviors.

Therapists and physicians frequently recommend vibrators to treat sexual dysfunction and promote enjoyment during sex – especially women who have difficulty achieving orgasm. However, no studies have documented prevalence of use, or effect on sexual function.

According to Debby Herbenick, associate director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion, “The study about women’s vibrator use affirms what many doctors and therapists have known for decades — that vibrator use is common, it’s linked to positive sexual function such as desire and ease of orgasm, and it’s rarely associated with any side effects.”

The study is also the first to document vibrator use among men. Dr. Reece finds the studies important in helping “to further understand the way in which consumers are turning to the marketplace for products that promote their sexual health, suggesting that the findings have “important economic implications.”

Survey results showed that one in four women had used a vibrator within the past month, and that use was associated with being proactive about gynecologic health. More women who use a vibrator performed self-examination and were more likely to have a gynecologic exam during the past year.

Women who use vibrators also scored higher in sexual function, including desire, lubrication, arousal, and comfort. Over seventy percent reported no side effects with vibrator use.

Over forty-four percent of men reported using a vibrator during sexual activity during their lives. The results included gay, bisexual and heterosexual men. Men who reported using a vibrator recently scored higher on the International Index of Erectile Function that relates to erectile function, intercourse satisfaction, orgasmic function and sexual desire. They were also more likely to perform testicular self-exams. Heterosexual men more commonly used a vibrator during foreplay and intercourse.

The study sampled men and women age 18 to 60. Sexual stimulation with a vibrator during foreplay enhances health and is associated with quality of life according to the survey results – 2,056 women and 1,047 men responded to the study showing that vibrator use is common among men and women. Most drugstores and neighborhood retailers sell vibrators.
